EXPEDITIONS
Welcome Aboard
Rituals of the Sea expeditions embark in summer from our saltwater base at the head of Buck’s Harbor in Brooksville, Maine. Our fleet of ten distinct traditional open wooden boats includes multiple double-ended, two-masted, sail-and-oar workboats which have served the youth of this coast as experiential educational vessels for nearly half a century. Our expeditions aim to empower individuals and strengthen communities through the active tradition of caring for, handling, and living aboard traditional wooden boats. The rigors of an expedition among the islands and open waters of the Maine coast define a dynamic educational venue where challenge, teamwork, creative problem solving, and the natural elements are all at play.
A small sailing craft is not only beautiful, it is seductive and full of strange promise and a hint of trouble.

Wilderness is the home of human initiation. It is where, in times of illness, fear, despair, and confusion, human beings have always turned to test courage, to clarify purpose, to confirm place, to celebrate kinship, and to seek critical personal and collective renewal… We are not here to serve numbness, indifference, stasis, or the status quo… we are here to imagine the new world, to image the new myth, to blaze and burn and be this quirky, world-turning uniqueness that can only truthfully be manifested now, that will never pass this way again.
